SAN DIEGO HOTEL VETERAN ASSUMES INTERIM CVB HELM
Joe Terzi, a former senior vice president of Starwood Hotels and prominent leader in the San Diego hospitality industry since 1995, assumed the position of interim president and CEO of the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau (ConVis) on March 23. Terzi replaces David Peckinpaugh, whose term ends on June 30, 2009.
“I’m tremendously excited about promoting San Diego as a destination for leisure and business travelers throughout the United States and overseas, and I’m honored to guide a ConVis team that has continually been recognized as one of the best in the business,” stated Terzi, who began his hospitality career more than three decades ago.
“We know that Joe Terzi will excel in this position based on his distinguished career with Sheraton and Starwood Hotels,” said ConVis’ board chairman Jim Oddo, who announced the appointment following board approval on March 19. “We are very thankful for the marvelous work of David Peckinpaugh during his three years at the helm of ConVis, and while these are challenging times for tourism everywhere, we are confident that Joe will ably lead us through this transition,” continued Oddo.
“We take very seriously the important role our industry plays in the local economy. The recovery of a strong tourism sector, lead by ConVis and fueled by a reinvestment of Tourism Marketing District (TMD) revenues, will be a cornerstone to the regional economic recovery in the months ahead,” added Oddo.
Most recently, Terzi was a senior vice president for Starwood Hotels & Resorts until his retirement on January 1, 2009. He served on the ConVis’ board for 12 years and as its chairman in 2004. He was also a member of the advisory board of the San Diego State University School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, the board of directors of The Old Globe theater, the 2008 American Society of Association Executives Host Committee and the San Diego Lodging Industry Association. Terzi was a founding member and treasurer of the board of directors of the San Diego Tourism Promotion Corporation, the operating arm of the TMD.
