H1N1 (SWINE FLU) RESOURCES FOR SAN DIEGO TRAVELERS

SAN DIEGO, CA (April 30, 2009) – The San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau encourages travelers to heed the advice of experts when determining how best to manage health concerns like H1N1 Influenza (swine flu).  Right now, experts are saying it is safe to continue with planned travel to and within the United States, including to the San Diego region.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), swine flu should not discourage people from traveling to or within the United States.   Similarly, the World Health Organization continues to advise no restriction on travel related to swine flu, and no closing of borders.

In addition, San Diego International Airport and all the region’s major attractions, hotels, and other visitor offerings remain open for business and do not anticipate any interruption in service.

The following resources are suggested to those seeking a better understanding of swine flu as it relates to visitors to the San Diego region.

• San Diego County is a large geographic region of 4,269 square miles that encompasses metropolitan San Diego and 17 incorporated cities with a total population of 3,146,246.  Human cases of swine flu have been identified in the United States and internationally, including San Diego County.  For the latest information from the County of San Diego, visit http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/Portal/News/swineflu.html.

• The Centers for Disease Control recommends simple precautions, like hand washing, to help travelers stay healthy.  For details on the CDC’s recommendations for travelers, visit http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/contentSwineFluUS.aspx.

• At all ports of entry, border crossings and airports, Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection protocols are in place to monitor persons coming into the US and have those who appear to be sick evaluated by local health professionals.  For details on these protocols, visit http://www.dhs.gov/ynews/testimony/testimony_1241017177339.shtm.

The International Visitors Information Center (IVIC), operated by the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm PST and can be reached by calling (619) 236-1212.  Visitors can contact IVIC with inquiries. www.sandiego.org
