SAN DIEGO HOTEL VETERAN NAMED SAN DIEGO CVB PRESIDENT & CEO (San Diego, CA – July 16, 2009) Joe Terzi, interim president and CEO of the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau (ConVis) since March, has been selected as president and CEO by the Bureau’s board of directors, effective immediately. “It is truly an honor to be associated with an organization that is continually recognized as one of the leading Destination Marketing Organizations in the country. I’m fully committed to leading the incredibly talented team at ConVis in attracting more business and leisure visitors to San Diego,” said Terzi. “We have the best sales and marketing teams in the industry, and together with the increased funding provided by the Tourism Marketing District our ability to promote the San Diego region as a premier destination will only continue to strengthen,” Terzi added. “Tourism is critical to the San Diego economy, and we are delighted that Joe has accepted this important position. His in-depth knowledge and decades of experience and leadership in the hospitality industry will guide the Bureau through these difficult economic times,” said Andy Fichthorn, ConVis board chairman and executive vice president and general manager of SeaWorld San Diego. “We know that Joe is the right person for the current challenges and the future of ConVis,” Fichthorn added. An active member in the San Diego hospitality industry since 1995, Terzi was formerly a senior vice president for Starwood Hotels & Resorts until his retirement on January 1, 2009. He served on the ConVis’ board for 12 years and was its chairman in 2004. He was also a member of the advisory board of the San Diego State University School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, the board of directors of The Old Globe Theater, the 2008 American Society of Association Executives Host Committee and the San Diego Lodging Industry Association. Terzi was also a founding board member of the San Diego Tourism Promotion Corporation, the operating arm of the city’s Tourism Marketing District (TMD), which provides funding for the Bureau.
Terzi replaces David Peckinpaugh, who asked that the Bureau not extend his three-year contract beyond its June 30, 2009 expiration. Terzi will not be under a contractual arrangement at ConVis, as were previous Bureau president and CEOs. The San Diego office of Manpower, Inc. assisted the ConVis board in their national search process. ###
