Landmark Hotel Invests $8 Million Into Property

By Leslie Araiza

LA JOLLA, CA. — The Grande Colonial Hotel, located in the Village of La Jolla, has completed an $8 million renovation that included a complete renovation of the hotel’s existing 75 guest rooms and suites in the main building. Also recently completed is the historic preservation of two adjacent historic landmarks, which added 18 new luxury suites to the hotel’s inventory.

“We went to great lengths to capture the feel of a coastal hotel, creating an atmosphere that brings out the excitement of the ocean, yet with a mood that is inviting and sophisticated,” says Terrence Underwood, general manager. “All 93 guest rooms and suites, while maintaining their historic charm, now take on a look and feel that represents La Jolla’s seacoast village feel of conservative and classic quality.”

As part of the extensive overhaul, each of the 75 guest rooms, suites and corridors in the hotel’s main building has been completely refurbished. New draperies, bedding, wall coverings and carpet capture a vibrant, yet soothing, mood. Comfortable furnishings, enhanced and contemporary amenities and new artwork reflect La Jolla’s priceless ocean views, bringing new life to the boutique property. Additionally, all of the original single-pane, wood-framed windows have been replaced with double-pane, screen-less, tempered glass windows significantly improving the energy efficiency, sound and insulation. In keeping with the tradition of the property and unlike other hotels, the windows open to panoramic views and ocean breezes.

Also recently unveiled is the addition of 18 new, luxury suites in two adjacent wings: the Little Hotel by the Sea and Garden Terraces (both designated as historic landmarks in 1984 and 1990 respectively). Interior design of both buildings, provided by Jordan Design Group of Carmel, reflects comfortable residential style with full kitchens or kitchenettes in each unit. Select suites also feature fireplaces, oversized soaking tubs and oversized showers with adjustable body jets and oversized rain shower-heads.

“The hotel recognized the demand for a product in San Diego that would cater to the long-term-stay, luxury traveler seeking more residential-style accommodations,” added Underwood. “Each of the 18 new suites reflects a more residential-feel, conveying the feeling of an ocean vacation condo as opposed to a typical hotel room.”

Guest staying in the new suites enjoy exclusive “club-level” benefits including complimentary in-room refreshments, complimentary breakfast in NINE-TEN or in-room, complimentary valet parking and complimentary domestic telephone calls. Guests also have full use of the amenities of the Grande Colonial to include swimming pool, room service, bell and valet service, meeting facilities, complimentary high-speed Internet access and dining at the award-winning NINE-TEN Restaurant.

Significant elements of the Little Hotel by the Sea project included the restoration of the building’s rooftop “loft” and deck, and restoration of the 1929 Baker & Sons elevator. The rooftop area will be used as an 8-person executive board room, guest library and sitting room, as well as an outdoor terrace providing panoramic views of the Pacific. The Baker & Sons elevator, which has been restored to full operation, is a four-passenger, solid-mahogany elevator housed in a steel tower. Soon after it was added to the hotel back in 1929, it became recognized as the “The Smallest Hotel in the World with an Elevator”. The cut-stone, basket weave tile floor in all 18 the bathrooms replicates the tile flooring that was originally in each room back in the mid-1920s. 15 of the 18 suites have hardwood floors; the majority of which are the original, red-oak flooring.

The Grande Colonial has been a landmark in the seaside village of La Jolla since 1913. Upon completion of the renovation, the hotel now offers 93 European-style, air-conditioned guest rooms and suites, each with ocean or village views and complimentary wired and wireless high-speed Internet access. Over 5,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space is also available for up to 120 guests. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily in the award-winning NINE-TEN Restaurant, led by chef Jason Knibb. The Grande Colonial is located at 910 Prospect Street in La Jolla, California.
