1. Look for a focal point. A beautiful landscape shot of the blue sky and water can be pretty, but with no focal point/s, can be very boring. Target your kids, pets, beach umbrellas, etc. Be creative!
2. Timing is everything. Aim for Sunrise or Sunset to get perfect, colorful, lively lighting.
3. Get your Horizon Level! Nothing is worse than a well composed photo that is tilted to the left or right. Unless of course you were going for artistic effect, but generally, a level horizon makes a better photo.
4. Go to the Beach When There is Nobody there! Unless you're looking for this:
5. Exposure Bracketing. When your in the bright sunlight it can be difficult to view your photos on your LCD screen. Play around with your aperture or shutter speed to take brighter and darker photos. Then you can choose the best ones from inside your home on your computer.
6. Fill Flash. Why would you need flash when it's bright out? If you're in the middle of a beautiful sunny day, often your subjects, be they human, canine or whatever, will have shadows. Fill those shadows in with your camera's flash!
7. Photograph Reflections. Immediately after that wave rolls out, look at the still wet sand, and you will be amazed at the creative possibilities you can shoot with those reflections.
8. UV Filters. Costs around $10-$20 and it protects your $200 lens from getting scratched by sand. It also cuts back a bit on the blue tinge created by UV light bouncing around in the atmospheric haze.
9. Circular Polarizer filter. Do you wear polarized sunglasses? This filter does to your images what your sunglasses do to your eyes. It cuts out glare, makes colors richer and deeper, boosts contrasts, and helps you get the focus of your photos on where you want them.
10. Black and White. Black and White photography is often more dramatic and emotional then color. Play with it on your camera or in photoshop and you might be amazed at your results.
