Barra Barra Saloon Wins Best New Restaurant
--“Loco for Locals” Menu Extended Through Nov. --
Barra Barra Saloon, located in Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town, has won the coveted title of “Best New Restaurant” in the 2009 San Diego CityBeat Reader’s Poll. The poll was voted on by the readers of San Diego City Beat Magazine and the winners were featured in the Nov. 11 issue.
“This is really exciting to be voted “Best New Restaurant” by CityBeat readers,” said owner Chuck Ross. “Ever since we opened our doors on April 17, the staff has worked very hard to make Barra Barra a unique local experience. It’s great knowing that San Diego recognizes our efforts and we appreciate that.”
The décor at Barra Barra is historically inspired and includes one-of-a-kind Mexican artifacts and furnishings. The eclectic menu features traditional Mexican comfort food with a variety of appetizers, tortas, handmade rellenos, enchiladas and tamales. Each dish has a unique sauce prepared by Executive Chef Fernando MacKenzie.
This isn’t the first award for the six-month-old Fiesta de Reyes, according to Ross. Last month, Casa de Reyes earned the title of “Best Salsa” in all of Old Town at the Fiesta of Flavors event in September by the Old Town Chamber of Commerce.
Ross also noted that the successful “Loco for Locals” special menu has been extended through the end of November. This menu includes an entrée and a house margarita for only $10. It is only available by request at both Barra Barra Saloon and Casa de Reyes and features popular menu selections like the Indian Flat Bread taco plate with pollo guisado or slow-roasted carnitas, chicken chimichanga or puerco anchiote torta at Barra Barra. At Casa de Reyes, the special menu includes traditional cheese enchiladas, taco, burrito and tostada plates.
Barra Barra was formally The Jolly Boy Saloon. The new name simply means, “Bar, Bar,” reflecting a generic and unbranded establishment name similar to those from 1800s. The restaurant provides outdoor and indoor seating with décor, ambiance and costumed servers reflecting the historic era reflected in Old Town State Historic Park.
Fiesta de Reyes is located at Juan and Calhoun streets, a one-block stroll from the Old Town Trolley Station. In addition to the Barra Barra Saloon and Casa de Reyes restaurant, the plaza boasts 14 specialty stores. For more information call (619) 297-3100 or visit www.FiestaDeReyes.com.
