Whale Watching Season Begins Dec. 10th on Hornblower
Hornblower Launches into Whale Watching Season on December 10, 2011. San Diego’s ultimate eco-adventure showcases wild gray whales, Hornblower Cruises & Events offers guaranteed sightings and a greener-than-ever experience.
Hornblower Cruises & Events is ready and waiting for the annual gray whale migration between the frigid Arctic waters and the warm lagoons of Baja California. Each 3 1/2-hour Adventure gets guests out quickly to prime viewing areas off San Diego’s coast and is narrated by seasoned captains and knowledgeable on-board naturalists from the San Diego Natural History Museum.
Whale & Dolphin Watching Adventures depart daily at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm, primarily on Adventure Hornblower, a biodiesel-powered vessel that features on-board displays and video clips highlighting Hornblower’s eco-outreach. And with a new green emphasis, Hornblower will update its famous cruise to feature local environmental efforts as part of the company’s Respect Our Planet program, a series of initiatives designed to reduce the company’s environmental impact and educate the public. In addition to the new displays and video clips, the updates include an updated narration spotlighting new environmentally-friendly sights on the way in and out of the bay and more sustainable products. Hornblower also is participating in an EPA-funded study of copper-free paints that aims to minimize boating impact in San Diego Bay.
San Diego has long been known as a top spot for watching the annual migration, and guests often see several species of dolphins as well as California sea lions, a variety of marine mammals and countless seabirds while sailing past local landmarks. With years of experience, the company’s captains know the best sites for spotting whales: In fact, Hornblower hands out a pass good for another whale watching tour or harbor cruise if a whale is not sighted. Sighting updates are posted regularly in the online Hornblower Captain’s Log, (http://www.hornblower.com/whales/captainslog.htm).
Coming this January, Hornblower will proudly sponsor of the fourth annual Big Bay Whale Days – a month of money-saving deals on tours, tickets and meals – and San Diego Whale Festival, scheduled for January 22, 2012, from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. The Whale Festival will be held at the foot of Broadway and Harbor Drive and will feature music, exhibits and family fun. Visit the website www.whaledays.com.
