GO AHEAD, MAKE AN ACE OF YOURSELF
SAN DIEGO CA -- Have you ever dreamed of being a fighter pilot? Do your palms get sweaty watching Top Gun? Thanks to the folks at Biplane, Air Combat & Warbird Adventures in San Diego, California, your dreams can come true. Under the watchful eye of one of their experienced safety pilots, you'll be on the controls doin' the yankin' and bankin'! It's not virtual reality, it's real reality. Everything's real but the bullets. Just like you've seen on TV and in the movies. This is hands-on, heart pounding, adrenaline pumping dogfighting. No pilot's license required--just guts! Go ahead, make an ace of yourself!
The planes they fly are propeller driven Varga VG-21s, with excellent climb and turning performance and room for two pilots in tandem seating with joystick controls. They may not have jet engines but everyone agrees they're an absolute hoot to fly.
The adventure starts with a 30 minute briefing where the guest pilot's learn air combat maneuvers from active duty and retired fighter pilots and test pilots. According to company president, Kate Lister, "I have to pinch myself when I think the caliber of guys who fly for us. It's a real honor to work with literally, the best of the best."
After the tactical brief, they'll head out to their planes for a cockpit checkout. Then they man up, strap in and take off in formation. Once they're over the coast, the pilots will demonstrate the maneuvers they talked about before turning the controls over to the "recruit". After a little practice time, they'll go beak to beak for 3 full on, best man wins, dogfights.
According to chief pilot, Tailspin Tommy Harnish, "While most of our guest pilots have never flown an airplane, we occasionally get some ringers like a WWII ace, a couple of F-86 pilots from Korea, several Vietnam-era F-4 pilots, and an F-18 pilot who flew combat missions in the Gulf. Even with all their experience they still came back hootin' and hollerin' saying it was the most fun they'd had in years."
The company also claims that Top Dog Air Combat is a great way to work out those family rivalries - and it's cheaper than a shrink. It makes a perfect gift for Dad's, Grads, and even Moms. If you've got the guts, they've got the adventure. Go ahead, make an ace of yourself!
