Star of India

A San Diego Icon

The crown jewel of the San Diego Maritime Museum, the Star of India, has become an icon for the city. She provides a large, highly adaptable space for private tours, parties and special events. Her beauty serves as a landmark for all to see and appreciate.

The 205 foot three-mast tall ship was built on the Isle of Man in 1863, one of the early wrought-iron ships constructed. Because her hull resists corrosion, she made 21 round trips around the world and continued to survive long after thousands of wooden windjammers had rotted away. Now the Star of India is the oldest actively sailed ship in the world.

Twice a year, she spreads a cloud of canvas, 20 sails in all, manned by a crew of 60 volunteer sailors. Accompanied by a fleet of small yachts and other water craft, she sails on the open ocean for a few glorious hours before returning downwind the length of San Diego Bay, cheered on by crowds of bystanders lining the shores. No wonder the Star of India is so endeared by the City of San Diego and visitors from around the world.

In port, the Star, along with the 1904 ferry Berkeley and the tall ship H.M.S. Surprise provides a variety of venues for either corporate or private events, such as theme parties, dinners, product launchings, team-building, company gatherings, holiday parties, receptions, galas and weddings.

For large, high-impact dockside events, the ship can accommodate as many as 600 guests. Smaller events, such as parties for up to 100 persons, can enjoy harbor and city views from the elevated quarterdeck, with its beautiful varnished seats and deck furnishings, all original from 1863.

An even more intimate setting (up to 20 people) for private dinners and cocktail receptions are provided by the Captain’s Cabin and the adjacent First Class Salon. Paneled in the original teak and oak, with a stained glass skylight, guests can dine in the true elegance of the Victorian era.
Because of her extraordinary climate, hospitality, and recreation amenities, San Diego is arguably the most sought after destination for convention and meeting business. The Star of India serves as a community resource and is proud to stand as an icon for "America's finest City".
