San Diego Chargers
By Brian Hilemon
For visitors looking for excitement during the fall and winter months, the Chargers offer a signature San Diego experience. The emotion inside sun-soaked QUALCOMM stadium is hard to match in all of professional sports. When a capacity crowd of 71,500 goes wild, the stadium literally shakes with excitement. The Chargers have been a San Diego staple since founding owner and hotel magnate Barron Hilton moved the team down from Los Angeles in 1961. QUALCOMM Stadium received a $78 million dollar facelift in 1997 adding 10,500 seats and 34 suites in preparation for Super Bowl XXXII in 1998. There is always plenty of parking; given that QUALCOMM Stadium has 18,500 spaces in its 122-acre lot. That lot is host to one of the best tailgating experiences in America. Fans arrive early and often to prepare their favorite dishes, talk strategy, and play catch, creating a dynamic community to wander through before and after games. The passion of Charger fans can only be described by the term “die-hard.” These loyal locals live and die with every play, making the event truly memorable for visitors. San Diego’s unique, laid-back hospitality will make visitors feel right at home. The weather is always picture perfect during the football season, even deep into the winter months providing a warm escape for fans from all over the country.
