San Diego Padres
By Brian Hilemon
In existence since 1969, the San Diego Padres compete in the National League’s Western Division against teams from Phoenix, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. San Diego’s world-famous climate is on display all summer long when the Padres take the field. With all it has to offer, San Diego is a favorite destination for sports travelers who follow their favorite teams, or who want to experience a game in a new venue. Beyond the ballgame, a trip to PETCO Park is a complete entertainment experience for the entire family. World Series participants in 1984 and 1998, the Friars –as they are known by locals- have enjoyed winning seasons each year since their move to PETCO Park in 2004.
Located adjacent to the Historic Gaslamp Quarter -a thriving district of shopping, dining, and nightlife- PETCO Park brings all the excitement of a Major League Baseball game into a bustling downtown setting. With tickets as low as five dollars, visitors can make a trip to the ballpark an all-day experience by enjoying the nearby San Diego Bay, shopping at Horton Plaza or Seaport Village, and a pre-game dinner at one of the neighboring eateries ringing the ballpark, which vary from sports bars, to fine dining experiences.
Once inside the park visitors will enjoy the nuances of the new ballpark as well as sweeping views of the city. The Western Metal Supply Co. building is the signature feature of PETCO Park. This historic brick building is actually part of the playing field, doubling as the left-field foul pole. It also houses a team store, party suites, a bar & grill, and a rooftop deck. Ballpark fare ranges from the four food groups of baseball –peanuts, cracker jacks, hot dogs, and beer- to sushi and fish tacos, and everything in between.
Kids will love the Park in the Park, an interactive area complete with playground equipment and a Little League baseball diamond where aspiring heroes can take a swing and run the bases all night long. Families and fans will also enjoy the Padres Power Alley, home to a batting cage, fastest-pitcher game, and equipment displays from Rawlings, located behind the right field bleachers.
With an exciting young nucleus of talent, the Padres are a great entertainment value for visitors to San Diego. Baseball season runs from April through early October.
