Astronomy: The Sky Tonight - Monthly Planetarium Shows
Tour the Cosmos in California's Largest Planetarium!
We'll have you seeing stars! "The Sky Tonight" public planetarium shows are normally held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. inside the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s Heikoff Dome Theater in Balboa Park. This live planetarium show is led by a professional astronomer and is perfect for backyard astronomers who want to find their way around the universe.
Each month, audiences also explore a different interesting topic in astronomy, such as supernovas, constellations or black holes.
Upcoming topics in 2009 include:
Oct 7: Looking for Earths: The Kepler Mission
Nov 4: Supernovae and Gamma Ray Bursts
Dec 2: The Constellations of Winter
Weather and operational requirements permitting, the San Diego Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors following the Fleet's planetarium show. This is a separate free event--planetarium show tickets are not required.
Due to the darkness required in the theater and the sophisticated nature of the material presented, “The Sky Tonight” show is not recommended for children 5 years and under. Tickets to the planetarium shows are sold on a first-come, first-served. Fleet Members may make advance reservations by calling (619) 238-1233 ext. 810. It is recommended that all others arrive at the Science Center by 6:30 p.m. to purchase tickets for this popular program. Tickets for “The Sky Tonight” include a visit to the Exhibit Galleries.
