Fit for a New Years Vacation

A New Year of fun in the sun!

A New Year of fun in the sun!

Active is the trend for 2008

It seems that the most common New Year's resolutions is to lose weight and get in shape. So every January local gyms see a spike in their membership sales and personal trainers are busier than ever. Until of course you take your first vacation of the year, and then it becomes your excuse to get off track, eat indulging meals, and skip working out until you get home. And when you get home, of course you have bills piled up, laundry to do, work to catch up on, and then again the working out takes a backseat once again.... and of course if you are not exercising, why bother to eat healthy? And then begins the all too familiar vicious cycle that will inadvertently force you to have the same New Year's resolution again next year--lose weight and get in shape!

A new trend this year is to make your vacation active and thus keep up with your exercise regimen. Active vacations are a more creative way to stay in shape while having fun even though you are on vacation! If you make the effort to choose a destination that has plenty of recreational options that will motivate you to plan active, fun outdoor activities. Planning your vacation in fit cities with lots of recreational choices, like San Diego, can make staying fit while vacationing very easy!

If you can keep up your New Year's Resolution to stay fit even while on vacation, you may be able to save yourself from this vicious cycle, and in turn having the same resolution again next year. For example, in San Diego recreational venues are everywhere you turn. There is even a company that specializes in unique fun & active activities that can help you stay in shape while on vacation. San Diego Bike & Kayak at La Jolla Shores offers bike, kayak, and snorkel rentals and tours. Try their Freefall bike tour and sightsee at the same time through La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Mission Bay. This bike tour is a great way to have fun, tour local, unique spots, and also to get some exercise! You can also try their downtown/Coronado bike tours or simply rent a bike and ride along San Diego's amazing coast on your own. San Diego Bike & Kayak will provide suggested routes and has a $20 per day rental rate, the best deal around. The city is full of bike routes and lanes throughout coastal San Diego. Biking is a great way to incorporate a resistance workout with cardio, and offers a refreshing alternative to running and walking. Biking is easier on the joints and is not a direct impact activity.

Or try something new by kayaking to the 7 Caves of La Jolla. Kayaking is not only a great upper body workout it is also a great way to get on the ocean and witness some of the most spectacular scenery around. Kayakers usually see sea lions, seals, Garibaldi, and occasionally dolphin. Kayakers will use stable sit-on-top ocean kayaks that are easy to use for first timers. Kayaking is a great core workout and also emphasizes the triceps, lats, and biceps.

You can also rent some snorkel gear and snorkel in the world famous La Jolla Cove and follow the designated swim route to get in a good ocean swim while also snorkeling San Diego's best spot! La Jolla Cove is full of lap swimmers and triatheletes who frequent this open water swim spot and you can join them.
