San Diego Water Sports
San Diego loves to play on the water. With mild surf and warm temperatures all year-round, our beaches, bays and lakes are the perfect place to try a new activity or practice your favorite sport. The starring attraction of the water sports scene is surfing, but there are all kinds of other ways to mess around in the water. Sailing, swimming, kayaking and snorkeling are popular with locals and tourists alike and adrenaline junkies will love wakeboarding, kitesurfing and jet skiing. Most water sports are centered around San Diego’s three bays - Oceanside Harbor, Mission Bay and San Diego Harbor. Experienced kite-surfers congregate around Tourmaline Street in Pacific Beach; wakeboarders, waterskiers and wave runners like the east end of Mission Bay, and windsurfers seem to like the west end. Kayaks are found throughout San Diego, but the most popular tours leave from La Jolla Shores beach. Some water sports involve big, expensive equipment. You can rent a ski boat or kite-surfing rig, but it is often worth calling ahead to check on proficiency requirements and other expectations. The same outfits that offer rentals typically offer guided tours or instruction for about the same it would cost you to take the gear out on your own.
