Water Sports - The Scoop

Play in the Water All Year Round

Although you might expect water sports to be a seasonal pastime, in San Diego, passionate enthusiasts tend to practice their hobbies year-round. In the summer and early fall, you can get by with a bathing suit or light wetsuit, but from November thru May, plan to wear a fullsuit of 3mm thickness or more.

Sports that require wind will, for obvious reasons, fare better in the afternoon hours of the stormier winter and spring seasons, while those that require calm, like wakeboarding and rowing will benefit from the glassy conditions in the early morning hours of summer and fall. The sports included here - with the exception of fishing - all involve big, expensive equipment. If you plan to rent something like a ski boat or a kite-surfing rig, call ahead to check on proficiency requirements and other expectations. The same outfits that offer rentals typically offer guided tours or instruction for about the same it would cost you to take the gear out on your own.
