Dining with a View
View Dining
By Robin Kleven
Gorgeous views are a dime a dozen in San Diego - just look around! But when you're looking for an extra-special place to savor food, drink and fabulous vistas, the following places are tops.
The Beach House, Cardiff
Built right over the seawall on a popular North County beach, this two-level eatery offers indoor and outdoor dining, well-prepared seafood, an oyster bar and a popular sit-down Sunday brunch. Bargain-priced "sunset special" dinners are served between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Valet parking available.
George's at the Cove, La Jolla
Spectacular ocean views abound at this La Jolla landmark, from the chic main floor dining rooms to the mid-level bar up to the top floor, open-air terrace. Truly special, from the award-winning contemporary cuisine to the always worth-watching clientele.
Pizza Nova, Point Loma
Great for casual dining, Pizza Nova is famous for wood-fired pizzas topped with anything from barbecued chicken and smoked gouda to Thai shrimp to goat cheese. Other best bets are the ample, colorful salads and spicy pasta preparations. Located on a working harbor filled with fishing boats and leisure craft near the former MTV "Real World San Diego" house.
The Steakhouse at Azul La Jolla, La Jolla
Perched 100 feet above spectacular La Jolla Cove, The Steakhouse at Azul La Jolla is located on fashionable Prospect Street, named “the Rodeo Drive of San Diego”, by Sunset Magazine. 100% USDA prime steaks, chops, poultry and a vast selection of fresh seafood are the main feature of the ocean-view dining room; while a casual patio menu with half-price Happy Hour is offered in the restaurant’s garden courtyard patio.
Top o' the Cove, La Jolla
This stylishly decorated, 100-year-old-bungalow overlooks the Pacific and is a favorite site for marriage proposals and special occasion dining. Pacific Rim and California cuisine are offered in the formal dining room (complete with piano bar), the lush front courtyard, and the more casual upstairs café and bar.
Top of the Hyatt, downtown
More elegant bar than restaurant, this 40th-floor establishment in the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel on San Diego Bay is a must-visit for view lovers. For best seating, choose a table facing west (preferably next to the windows) and be rewarded with a panorama of Point Loma, Coronado, the airport and the harbor. Bar menu available. Walking distance from the Convention Center.
