Given our proximity to the border, it's only natural that San Diego's the place for sublime Mexican cooking. Taco stands throughout the county offer grab 'n' go dining at rock-bottom prices, but for leisurely service, fiesta atmosphere and memorable flavors, try the following local favorites.
> El Agave, Old Town
A primo destination for authentic Mexican fare, El Agave serves many a dish rarely seen north of the border. Fiery mole poblano sauce with chicken or pork, tangy cilantro soup and garlicky sauteed shrimp are a few of the standouts. This lively restaurant draws SRO crowds for ample platters of tenderpork carnitas, pitchers of margaritas, combo plates and a happy party-time vibe. While you wait, watch the hard-working "tortillaladies" making hand-made tortillas at the front windows. Good for families and large groups.

Since 1946, this family-owned eatery has attracted families, celebrities and the annual racetrack crowd for muy grande portions of home-style Mexican food. It's fun without being fancy, with a menu that ranges from quesadillas and carne asada to chicken mole. Indoor and patio dining.

Great for "nice-casual" dining, with a spacious covered patio (complete with fireplaces), plenty of seating indoors and out, and numerous Mexican specialties like carnitas, seafood ceviche and tortilla soup. A member of the Brigantine chain, the restaurant also serves steaks, seafood, pastas and wood-fired pizzas.
