America's Cup San Diego 2011

San Diego is the third stop in the inaugural America’s Cup World Series (AC World Series), which will take place November 12-20, 2011 and feature both fleet and match racing.

The AC World Series San Diego will consist of four events over nine days, in the exciting AC 45 catamarans:

• San Diego America’s Cup Open
• America’s Cup 500 Speed Trial
• America’s Cup Match Racing Championship
• America’s Cup World Series San Diego Championship

San Diego AC Open - Held over the opening weekend, this fleet racing event will reveal what the teams are made of both in terms of tactical decision-making and pure speed. The opening weekend will feature up to four fleet races with 10 boats battling for supremacy.

AC 500 Speed Trial - On the opening Saturday, the teams will vie for the title of fastest boat through timed speed trials over a 500-metre course, pushing their wing-sailed AC45 catamarans to the limit.

San Diego AC Match Race Championship - The third stage of the competition pits the teams in one-on-one clashes to earn a place in a final showdown on Saturday. Each day will consist of three, 20-minute fleet races to determine the top six teams, who then face off through three match races. Every day of racing produces a ranking of the full fleet. The results over the three days will determine the seeding order for the Match Race Championship.

On the final Saturday, the Match Race Championship will find the six best teams (as determined over the previous three days) battling through a Quarter Final, Semi-Final and Final to determine the San Diego AC Match Race winner.

AC World Series Championship - This title is at stake on the final Sunday in a winner-takes-all fleet race, where all teams will have a shot at the title.

At the end of the overall 2011-2012 AC World Series, the AC World Series Champion will be crowned based on the scores from each of the final Sunday fleet races. In addition, an overall match race champion will be recognized based on the cumulative scores from each AC Match Race Championship.

Fan Zone

The San Diego Bay will come alive with the America’s Cup experience when the America’s Cup World Series kicks off in San Diego, California November 12-20. The nine-day international sporting competition will see fast action on the race course and off the water, thousands of fans will enjoy live music, access to sailing stars and, interactive displays in a fun-charged festival on shore at the America’s Cup Race Village located on Harbor Drive.

Spectators will be able to watch live racing, featuring America’s Cup groundbreaking new graphics and live commentary and visit the America’s Cup Experience, where visitors will get a taste of the teams and what it’s like to sail on a high-speed catamaran. While the athletes take a break from the action, visitors can take on the Racing Simulator and sail on your own match race test, video-game style.

Getting Around the America's Cup

Avoid the Parking Hassles! The public transport system in San Diego is an ideal way to get down the America's Cup World Series.

Metropolitan Transit System
North Harbor Drive will be extremely busy during the races and the Port of San Diego encourages the use of public transportation. The San Diego Trolley has convenient stations within walking distance of the America’s Cup World Series event.

North County Transit District
The North County Transit District operates the Coaster train, which brings travelers from Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Sorrento Valley, and Old Town right to a few blocks from the Embarcadero.

Amtrak
The train station is only a few blocks from the Embarcadero. The Pacific Surfliner route goes up the California coast – they also offer routes covering the entire U.S. – and train travel is a breeze.

Nearby Parking
Parking on Navy Pier is limited to a small quantity of disabled parking stalls. There is no parking allowed at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. Metered spaces are available on the east and west sides of North Harbor Drive. Additionally, there are several nearby pay-to-park lots.
