Frequently Asked Questions

Mexico Travel Alert

What documentation is required to visit Tijuana and Baja California?
Tijuana, the closest Mexican city, is approximately 16 miles south of downtown San Diego. For information on the documentation required, please visit our Visitor Safety Tips for Traveling in Mexico.

Do we have to pay a fee to visit Baja California?
In July 1999, Mexican Government legislation established a fee for non-Mexican nationals visiting Mexico who stay more than 72 hours or travel any further south than Ensenada.

Where can I find more information on what to see and do in Baja?
The Mexican city of Tijuana, gateway to Baja, California, is just minutes away from downtown San Diego. Rosarito and Ensenada are also an easy drive. Several San Diego tour/sightseeing companies offer day and overnight trips to Baja California Norte.

Can we use U.S. dollars in Tijuana?
All businesses in Tijuana will accept U.S. dollars so it is not necessary to change into pesos. The Mexican peso is the official currency, and its rate of exchange in relation to the dollar fluctuates on a daily basis. Currency and travelers checks can be exchanged for pesos at any bank or currency exchange company.
