San Diego’s North County is a vast, expansive region known for its pristine beaches, natural preserves and miles of open spaces. It is made up of a collection of unique communities, from the picturesque seaside villages of La Jolla, Del Mar and Carlsbad to the scenic Rancho Bernardo, nestled in a lush valley amidst golf courses and wineries.

If you’re looking for opportunities for outdoor activities in San Diego, the north region is the ideal spot. From hiking in Torrey Pines State Park and cycling up Palomar Mountain to surfing or kayaking in La Jolla, there is something for everyone.

North County is also home to some of San Diego’s top attractions, including the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, LEGOLAND California, Birch Aquarium at Scripps, the Flower Fields at Carlsbad, and the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla. A stay in San Diego’s North region puts you halfway between Disneyland and downtown San Diego where the museums of Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, SeaWorld San Diego and the San Diego Zoo are nearby.

San Diego’s North region is also a paradise for golfers, with over 40 diverse courses to choose from. Both the 2008 US Open Championship and the PGA Tour’s annual Farmers Insurance Open are also held in this area at the legendary Torrey Pines golf course, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean and La Jolla coastline.

Dining is a treat in North County. This area boasts Southern California’s only Five Star and Five Diamond restaurant, Addison at The Grand Del Mar, and San Diego’s “Top Rated Restaurant” by Zagat Survey, El Bizcocho at Rancho Bernardo Inn, plus a range of more casual dining experiences. As a region with strong agricultural roots, many of the chefs have also forged strong bonds with area farmers and infuse their cuisine with local, seasonal ingredients.

The lodging options here are as diverse and delightful as its landscapes and natural beauty. Escape to an elegant romantic bed and breakfast in the mountains, lounge at a four-star hotel by the beach, or treat yourself to a well-deserved break at a golf or spa resort. The choice is yours!
