San Diego's climate and natural beauty make it a premier golf destination in the United States. Few areas can rival San Diego's diverse array of courses and landscapes, from the oceanfront majesty of Torrey Pines to the mountain views of Maderas, golfers are sure to enjoy the links in America's Finest City. If there was a motto for golf in San Diego, it'd have to be the famous paraphrase "So Many Golf Courses, So Little Time". Add awesome year-round weather to the mix and you have our golfing paradise. Or as they say in the business: a "golf destination."
There are more than 80 golf courses in the San Diego area with enough variety in length and architectural style to satisfy any taste and golfing ability. The menu caters to the avid golfer, the expert, the family... pretty much to anyone who can swing a golf club.
San Diego’s North County Inland features desert-style courses with bushy vegetation, fantastic panoramic views, and dramatic changes in elevation.
Similar design is also found in the southeast part of the county. These courses feature the afternoon warm desert breeze as a challenge to the players. In fact, the same track can play differently from morning to afternoon due to the changing wind. Maderas, Steele Canyon, Rancho Bernardo Inn, and Sycuan are perfect examples of this type of course.
The golf courses along the west side of the county present another type of wind: the cool sea breeze, which also typically comes into play by mid to late morning. These are flatter courses that can also feature elevation changes to make club selection a real puzzle to any player. Examples of west-side courses include Torrey Pines -- home of the Farmers Insurance Open, 2008 US Open and Junior World Championships -- with its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, Aviara and it immaculate layout, Morgan Run, Riverwalk and The Grand Golf Club at The Grand Del Mar -- the only Tom Fazio design in the county.
