This event is free, no admission is required

5/04/11 Exploring Ethics Lecture - in conjunction with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Fleet invites guests to encounter science from an ethical perspective.

Lecture: “Who Owns Your Cell Phone?” – The first part of this talk examines the fact that a cell phone, by itself, is useless; without the cooperation of the operator, the sales and service network, subsidies and the like, it would be an expensive and useless brick. As cell phones become more like computers, they rely more and more on diverse infrastructure, and many of the players have conflicting goals. Much frustration can be traced to this tension. The second part of the talk examine the fact that, as phones become much more like computers, they become targets for hacking and various kinds of attacks on their security. (Hackers refer to "owning" their targets.) Greg Rose, Senior Vice President, Office of the Chief Scientist at QUALCOMM Inc. examines some of the security issues and possible consequences of a breach.

To attend, RSVP to 858-822-2647. 5:30 – 7:00 pm, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center Community Forum.
