January 4 - "Science Literacy and Underserved Populations"
Part of the "Henrietta Lacks Project," an unprecedented regional array of events examining research ethics and diversity issues through the bestselling book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Dr. Tate Hurvitz addresses a deep gap in our science education - the difference between "reading" content and "comprehending" it. We must teach strategies for decoding challenging information, assessing sources, and incorporating new ideas. To do this, though, we must confront the very difficult and personal and institutional challenges of introducing literacy training science curriculum.
