Dr. Spencer Wells presents “Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project” Nov. 11, 6:30pm at the Charmaine and Maurice Kaplan Theater at the San Diego Natural History Museum. “We are all effectively cousins separated by no more than 200 generations,” says Dr. Spencer Wells, who will be presenting a lecture about his global Genographic Project, now on display at the Museum of Man.
Dr. Spencer Wells has dedicated much of his career to studying humankind’s family tree and closing the gaps in our knowledge of human migration. Wells applied new scientific techniques to dig deeper into the details of our ancient past. Following strict ethical protocols, regional teams of Genographic scientists are collaborating with indigenous and traditional people worldwide to analyze their DNA. Because of their relative isolation, they retain the ancestral context in which their genetic diversity arose.
The exhibit, at the Museum of Man, allows visitors to walk along a map of migration that began 60,000 years ago. Through Dr. Wells’ research, we are able to trace the routes of the female and male descendents of the earliest hominids in Africa. The paths they took are reflected in our genes, our DNA.
