12/17/05 Two names synonymous with San Diego’s local jazz and blues scene will headline the 2005 Holiday Jazz & Blues Festival. Carl Evans, Jr. is scheduled to lead this year’s jazz portion of the festival while Tomcat Courtney will top the blues part of the event. Having performed here for decades and amassing significant followings, both artists are staples of the local jazz and blues scenes.

“The wonderful thing about the Holiday Jazz & Blues Festival is that it offers a venue for local jazz and blues artists like Evans and Courtney to perform and share their favorite Christmas music in a festival setting. Songs like Merry Christmas Baby and This Christmas are magical holiday favorites among jazz and blues lovers. This type of music will certainly put you in the Christmas spirit and that’s what the festival is all about,” said Karen L. Huff, event coordinator.

This marks the festival’s third year in which it is being stage in downtown San Diego at seventh & Market Street, two blocks north of Petco Park. The event is Saturday December 17, 2005 (11am-Midnight) and is free to the public. A donation of any amount is appreciated and accepted to benefit the Black Historical Society.

Other artists as part of the 2005 Holiday Jazz & Blues Festival lineup include Reggie Smith, Jason Weber, Lee Brown Perspective, Lady Star & the Bustin’ Loose Blues Band, Stage 4 Jazz Quintet, Brothers of Praise Phase II and many more.

The yearly event takes place the third Saturday in December in downtown San Diego’s East Village. The festival is based on holiday activities associated with down’s historic Jazz and Blues scene during the 1920's when African American club owners in the area would facilitate the festivities of the holiday season by offering gifts and food to children and other disadvantaged people. The holiday celebrations included cultural activities, music, food and fun for everyone. The festivities were centered in and around Market Street between Second and 7th Ave.

In keeping with the tradition, the Holiday Jazz & Blues Festival features plenty of holiday trinkets, food and beverages in addition to Jazz, and Blues Christmas music.

This festival offers an opportunity for family, friends, and guests, to enjoy a day and evening of holiday jazz & blues while browsing together for that unique holiday gift. It's a family affair, feel free to bring the kids so they too can join in the festivities.

The gate opens at 11:00am, closes at Midnight and is free to the public. A donation of any amount is welcomed.
