University Avenue leads into the neighborhood's central village, distinguished by the historic neon "Hillcrest" sign that arches over the roadway. On intersecting Fifth Avenue, you'll find a concentration of new and established restaurants, as well as a few dessert-centric eateries. There's also a see-worthy collection of vintage clothing boutiques, book outlets, coffeehouses and much more.

There’s always a party at insideOUT, an LGBTQIA+ -owned Hillcrest restaurant set in the open-air atrium of the Eitol Towers. The stylish, terraced space features cozy seating nooks, water fixtures and a vibrant atmosphere year-round.

Gossip Grill specializes in modern American comfort food, with a wide range of soups, salads, burgers and pastas — not to mention the LGBT sandwich, a signature twist on the BLT. There are also extensive brunch and lunch menus. All the food and cocktails are crafted and served in a welcoming space with feminine-inspired art, fabulous chandeliers, dance floor, an outdoor patio bar with two fire pits, and even a swing set. 

The Studio Door is a contemporary art gallery that's treasured in Hillcrest for its devotion to the community and its dedication to the creative life. The gallery's curated monthly exhibitions complement its 17 working artist studios.

No visit to Hillcrest would be complete without a meal and a good time at Urban MO's, an iconic LGBTQIA+ gathering spot, featuring spacious outdoor patio seating and an upper deck to watch all the action. Colorful, fun and filled with friendly locals and visitors on any given afternoon or night, Urban MO's is a happy-hour favorite and is known for great burgers and strong cocktails adorned with plastic farm animals.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday, Hillcrest hosts one of the largest farmers markets in San Diego County. It's a great place to shop for local produce, arts and crafts, and the market also offers a wide range of gourmet stalls with hot and cold cuisine.
