MOXIE Theatre's programming includes a subscription season, play readings as well as education and outreach programs that range from classrooms to boardrooms. Each distinct MOXIE production or program shares one similar quality–moxie (“courage, pluck, gumption, perseverance, guts”). MOXIE Theatre produces plays that break new ground either through subject matter, style, or simply by conquering stereotypes. Founded and directed by women, MOXIE is one of the few theatres to produce primarily female playwrights. While we welcome male artists, staff, volunteers, board members and audiences, we actively promote opportunities for female directors, designers and technicians as well as the playwrights. We have created an environment where breastfeeding breaks are as equally acceptable as smoke breaks – where babysitting schedules are included with production schedules. Closing the gender divide in a business still lacking in equal opportunities is another way that MOXIE Theatre shows moxie. In addition to producing quality theatre, MOXIE recently launched the MOXIE Education Initiative to engage students in creative collaborations using theatre as a medium to deepen learning in science and technology, while learning the rudiments of theatre production. For adult education, MOXIE has been hired to work with half full, LLC, a local corporate development company, to conduct seminars, using theatre as a means to spurn interactive collaboration and team building within corporations.
