Through a strong partnership with the San Diego Environmental Services Department and our waste hauler Allied Waste, the Hilton San Diego Bayfront is proud to have officially become the first hotel in San Diego to participate in a food waste recycling / composting program.
Among the many benefits composting is a way to keep tons of organic material out of typical landfills. This substantially cuts down on greenhouse gases such as methane generated through decomposition (methane is a greenhouse gas that is much more potent in heat trapping capabilities than CO2 and the EPA has identified landfills as the largest source of methane generation). The compost is also used to help regenerate poor soils. It is shown to suppress plant diseases, reduces the need for fertilizers, and acts as a pollutant preventer in storm water runoff. Additionally it diverts a substantial amount of material from and assists with extending the life of municipal landfills.
The initiative has already been a success and has yielded several tons of food waste in just over a week. This is a fundamental approach to solid waste reduction and our participation in this initiative, in addition to an already successful commodities recycling program, further underscores our ongoing commitment to the environment.
