Mission Bay and Beaches Activities

In this year-round water wonderland, visitors can try a range of exciting water sports in designated public areas, including sailing, jet skiing, kite surfing, power boating, kayaking, fishing and swimming. There is no shortage of activities on dry land either. Mission Bay is popular for biking, jogging and skating and also has camping, picnic and playground facilities.

Mission Beach is home to Belmont Park, an amusement park and entertainment center which will keep the kids entertained with the Giant Dipper roller coaster, The Plunge indoor pool, The Wave House and arcades.

Mission Bay is also home to SeaWorld San Diego, one of the region's most popular family attractions, annual special events and plenty of things to do both on and off the water.

Five to Try in Mission Bay, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach

  1. Northern Wildlife Preserve
  2. Break out your binoculars while birding on the bay

Birding is a popular pastime along Mission Bay. At the Northern Wildlife Preserve/ Kendall Frost Marsh, birders look for skimmers, clapper rails, shorebirds, and brant at this 25-acre marsh. This area is also a good winter spot for large-billed savannah sparrow.

  3. Belmont Park
  4. Amusement park enjoyment steps from the beach

Adjacent to Mission Beach is Belmont Park, featuring its vintage "Giant Dipper" roller coaster, "The Plunge" giant indoor swimming pool, amusement arcades, and the Wave House with San Diego's only FlowRide, a simulated surfing platform with a non-stop wave.

  5. SeaWorld
  6. Sea life up close and personal

One of Mission Bay's most popular year-round attractions is SeaWorld San Diego, a 189-acre marine park that features several major shows including the park's star performer Shamu. Dozens of other fascinating exhibits contain marine life from around the globe, such as Wild Arctic, Penguin Encounter, Shark Encounter, and Manatee Rescue.

  7. Pacific Beach Shopping
  8. Unique shopping finds and fun beach shops

Located along Pacific Beach's main streets, Grand and Garnet Avenues, shoppers love the thrift stores, vintage clothing stores, boutiques, coffeehouses and hookah bars that line the two streets.

  9. Bahia Belle
  10. Moonlight cruises around the bay

For a nighttime treat, the Bahia Belle, a sternwheeler fashioned after a Mississippi riverboat, offers entertainment, drinks and dancing on moonlight cruises from the Bahia, Catamaran and Paradise Point Resort hotels.
