San Diego South Bay Activities

South Bay | Hotels | Events | Activities

South Bay is full of unique experiences and activities, from world-class music concerts at the outdoor Cricket Wireless Amphitheater and designer shopping at Las Americas Premium Outlets to public tours of an official U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Chula Vista boasts a scenic harbor and waterfront park, the perfect place for a leisurely walk or bike ride. There are also several sportfishing, sightseeing and whale-watching charters that operate out of the harbor.

Nature buffs will love the Chula Vista Nature Center and the ample opportunities for hiking, biking and bird-watching in the region's nature preserves and parks.

Five to Try in San Diego South Bay

  1. Tijuana River Estuary

Bird-watching abounds in this small, intertidal coastal estuary

One of the few salt marshes remaining in Southern California, the estuary features 2,500 acres of coastal wetlands and an interpretive center. It is an essential breeding, feeding and nesting ground and key stopover point on the Pacific Flyway for over 370 species of migratory and native birds, including six endangered species. Four miles of walking trails take visitors to prime bird-watching areas and there are also guided bird walks every Sunday at 3pm, beginning at the Visitor Center.

  2. ARCO/U.S. Olympic Training Center

Follow in the footsteps of U.S. Olympic athletes

ARCO is one of three U.S. Olympic Training Centers and the only warm-weather, year-round, multi-sport training facility. The center supports 4,000 athletes a year and various sports, including archery, bobsledding, canoeing/kayaking, cycling, field hockey, luge, rowing, rugby, skiing/snowboarding, soccer, softball and various Paralympics sports. Join the free guided tour every Saturday at 11:00 am, where you'll see the different sports venues, support facilities and possibly athletes in training.

  3. Knott's Soak City

Water park fun for the whole family

Have a blast on 22 of the wildest water rides available, all themed to the surf woodies and longboards of the 1950s San Diego coast! The water adventure park features one of the largest wave pools in Southern California, several water slides (including inner tube slides, multi-person rafts, and speed slides) and a children's area with squirt jets, water hoses, spiral slides and more.

  4. Cricket Wireless Amphitheater

Catch the hottest music acts on tour

This outdoor performing arts theater in Chula Vista is the area's first major concert facility designed specifically for music. With seating for up to 20,000, the venue attracts major music tour events. Past performers have included big name acts such as Metallica, Spice Girls, Eminem, Jack Johnson and many more.

  5. Sweetwater Regional Park

A hiker's paradise just minutes from the city

Fifteen miles of hiking trails and 53 campsites aren't the only reason to hike in this urban enclave. It's just 10 miles southeast of downtown San Diego and the Chula Vista Nature Center is a mere 5 miles away too. After a moderate hike through a scrub and oak landscape, hikers reach Summit Site, the park's highest point, where there are great views of the Pacific to the west and Tijuana to the south.
