The La Jolla Half Marathon and Shores 5K is one of America's most picturesque and beautiful point-to-point races.
Gone are choices of lukewarm pizza slices, tasteless hot dogs and hockey-puck burgers. At Petco Park, they've gathered the local favorite eateries from around the county and packed 'em all into a ballpark. It's the ultimate San Diego culinary experience...just disguised as a baseball stadium.
With the help of Padres Superfan Matt Schulte, this list highlights the best of the best at Petco Park.
Oh, you can get pizza and beer at other stadiums? Not like this. Pizza Port is a beloved San Diego staple, known for its delicious slices as well as the craft beer it brews. A specialty slice and a Walk-Off Wheat (brewed especially for Petco Park) puts pizza and beer on a whole 'nother level.
Seaside Market in Cardiff-by-the-Sea (North County) is famous for its tri-tip, affectionately (and feverishly) known as Cardiff Crack. The only place you can get 'em on nachos, however, is right here at Petco Park.
Phil's BBQ always seems to be rated as the best barbecue in San Diego, and it's not hard to see why. You can get your hands on its famous pulled pork sandwich right at Petco Park, but just be sure to grab more napkins than you think you'll need. This has been the go-to spot for Superfan Matt Schulte when he comes to the game with his uncle—a super tradition.
Randy Jones was a southpaw pitcher who spent most of his career with the Padres, using his famous sinker to strike out opposing batters. Now he's famous for his barbecue sauce and grilled goods. The Slugger Dog puts other ballpark dogs to shame, weighing in at a whopping half a pound.
You might not expect to find such a hand-crafted dessert experience at a ballpark, but then again, Petco Park isn't your average ballpark. This San Diego frozen treat fave lets you choose your ice cream, then puts a big ol' scoop between your pick of freshly baked cookies. Perfect for a hot day at the park.
Hodad's is as San Diegan as tan lines and flip-flops. Locals swear by the burgers, but they're not the only ones. Food Network personality Guy Fieri is such a fan (once stating that their bacon is the best he's ever had) that he has his own item on the menu: The Guido Burger.
No trip to San Diego is complete without a burrito, specifically the city's own creation known as The California Burrito. While the traditional "Cali B" fills a burrito with carne asada and French fries, Lucha Libre gives it a surf-and-turf twist and adds shrimp. What more could you want?
The Patio has popular San Diego locations in Mission Hills and Pacific Beach, offering eclectic menus and great drinks. Since you're at the ballpark, you may as well get the TJ Dog: a hot dog topped with applewood bacon and charred jalapenos, an homage to the city's neighbors south of the border. The TJ Dog is Superfan Matt's favorite ballpark hot dog.
Get some fish tacos, or maybe some potstickers, or perhaps some grilled chicken. It really doesn't matter, it's all amazing. The important thing is Rimel's Green Chile Garlic Sauce. People are obsessed with it, and for good reason. Also, Rimel's offers one of the coolest views from the rooftop of the historic Western Metal Supply Co. building.
Who doesn't love a good spicy tuna roll and some edamame? But did you ever expect to get down on some sushi while watching a ballgame? Zenbu is located just under the Western Metal Supply Co. building, and brings a level of fresh uncommon to ballparks.
The original Buona Forchetta opened in South Park in 2013. The third San Diego location and newest concept at Petco Park offers their popular Neapolitan style pizza, in addition to their new thick-crust Roman-style Pizza. The field-level location features a wine selection consisting of a wide variety of California and Italian varietals along with a Vespa gelato bar. Pizza is cooked in a Stefano Ferrara oven made from Biscotto di Sorrento clay found in Italy’s Sorrento region.
Since 2004, Blue Water Seafood has built a strong reputation for offering an exceptional range of “fresh & local” seafood. There are two locations inside Petco Park. The first is located on the Field Level at section 117, offering fresh fish tacos and sandwiches. A second location, located on the Toyota Terrace level at section 220 as part of The Still by Cutwater Spirits, offers an expanded menu which includes plates, clam chowder, poke and sashimi.
