Supporting the Community Since 1971

What began as a help line set up in 1971 by the late community activist, Jess Jessop, is now one of the largest LGBTQ+ resource facilities in the country. The San Diego LGBTQ+ Community Center, located in Hillcrest, is home to a host of social, cultural and health programs funded in part by the City of San Diego, County of San Diego Department of Health & Human Services and AIDS Walk San Diego, to name a few.

Visitors to The Center are greeted by a friendly staff eager to share information about the facility's numerous events, programs and discussion groups that are open to the public and tailored to all age groups. The Center also features a cyber lab for Internet access, an architecturally stunning auditorium used for many public events and a "wall of honor" celebrating local community activists who have made positive impacts on San Diego's LGBTQ+ community.

Some of the programs and events at The Center include:

  • A women's discussion group held from 7:15 to 8:45 PM on Mondays.
  • Ladies, laughter & literature is a lively book club/discussion group that meets from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on the third Tuesday of every month.
  • A men's discussion group based on general topics meets from 7:15 to 8:45 PM on Mondays.
  • Building on a positive life is a group for gay and bisexual men who are newly diagnosed or already living with AIDS/HIV. Dates and times vary for these weekly meetings.
  • The transgender coming-out group meets from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Mondays.
  • Yoga for everyone is a free class open to all levels and newcomers. It is held at 9:00 AM every Monday.
  • The "art group" is a hands-on workshop in multi-media materials for those 50-years old and up. It meets from 1:30 to 4:30 PM on Wednesdays.
  • Family movie nights in the auditorium take place from 6:30 to 8:30 PM the third Friday of every month.
  • Happy Birthday Frida is an annual event celebrating the life of acclaimed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The party kicks off to the merriment of live music, food, tequila and art exhibitions by esteemed Latin artists.
