Modeler Citizens Virtual Lecture Series

Oct 29, 2020

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum has debuted Modeler Citizens, a series of informative and entertaining presentations from an array of acclaimed railroad modelers and historians!

The talks take place every other Thursday at 6 p.m. through the end of 2020 (excluding holidays) via Zoom Webinar. Margaret Harris, the museum’s Collections Curator, moderates as the featured speaker showcases their own model layout, shares a bit of San Diego railroading history, or discusses a topic of their expertise. Viewers can learn about the history of cross-border travel from railroad pro Mike Thornhill (Oct. 1), get “behind the scenes” of the mechanics and creation of the museum’s O Gauge layout from modeler Bob Wall (Dec. 10), see a fascinating home layout courtesy of award-winning radio host “Shotgun” Tom Kelly (Oct. 29), and more!

Día de los Muertos (5th year!)

Nov 1 - Nov 2, 2020

Realizing our commitment to making theatre matter to more people, AXIS offers free cultural programs on the Globe’s Copley Plaza led by local artists and craftspeople. 9.5 million visitors pass through Balboa Park each year. The Old Globe strives to engage this population as we transform our non-performance space into a participatory art venue, utilizing the Globe’s unique physical location as an opportunity for connectivity and creative placemaking. AXIS is an effort to broaden our concept of audience, extending beyond regular ticket-holders and encompassing diverse, multigenerational constituencies from communities across San Diego County.

Virtual Nat Talk

Sep 30, 2020

In this talk, Wenfei Tong – a biologist, conservationist, and nature guide – offers both experienced ornithologists and those just beginning to discover the world of birds the chance to learn all about avian behavior, including in the face of a changing environment.

Birds are social creatures that share complex relationships and exhibit a wide variety of quirky habits. They compete with each other for mates, divide up parental responsibilities, and have many complex strategies to help them survive in the wild on their own and when flying in a large group. Drawing from her two books, Understanding Bird Behavior: An Illustrated Guide to What Birds Do and Why and Bird Love: The Family Life of Birds, Wenfei reveals how birds form families, find food, and cope with the threats of climate change.
