Art as Health

A Day of Art and HIV Testing

Between noon and 6 P.M. on Thursday, September 12, SDAI is offering free HIV testing, free admission to Forging Territories, free docent-led tours tailored for HIV-impacted individuals and communities, and a 6 P.M. panel discussion featuring artist and HIV activist Joey Terrill.

All elements of the event are open to the entire community and are presented with the generous cooperation of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the AntiViral Research Center at UCSD. While the focus of the panel discussion is Race, HIV, and Art: the Impact of HIV/AIDS on LGBTQ Artists and Communities of Color, the cultural and medical aspects of the virus as well as current methods of testing and treatment will also be discussed.

The evening will conclude with time for Q&A and socializing, with full bar and complimentary refreshments.

Julia San Roman - GLIMMER

Feb 21 - Apr 25, 2021

Julia San Román was born in Madrid, Spain, where the sun is abundant and the quality of light shapes the everyday landscape. As a child she was fascinated with art; however, she concentrated her formal education on science, choosing to move to the United States to further her career, ultimately earning a Phd in Biology. She found herself transplanted in sunny San Diego, CA, a place where the atmospheric landscape mimics that of her home country. After receiving training in Studio Arts and Art History at the collegiate level, she committed her life to painting.

Light takes center stage in San Román’s latest body of work, assuming the role of protagonist while the role of antagonist is cast as large, foreboding nimbus clouds. In these celestial scenes, light is in constant battle with the clouds for room in the sky.
