Living Room Lecture: Ancient Maya Cave Rituals

Feb 18, 2021

The ancient Maya are perhaps best known for their jungle-covered cities with large plazas and grand temples standing taller than the forests encasing them. These built places are often depicted as the settings of elaborate state rituals where elites would perform their ceremonial duties in front of the masses. Yet important rituals were not performed only in cities. Archaeological research over the last few decades has come to reveal that caves and cave-like spaces were among the most potent and important places for ritual performances by the ancient Maya. They were also portals to where powerful Earth forces, particularly the rain deity, could be ritually accessed and negotiated with.

Mary Ellen Marks: Twins

Oct 7, 2020 - ongoing

On View: September 11, 2020 – March 7, 2021

Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015) captured a captivating series a large-format Polaroid camera of twins and multiples at the annual Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio over the summers of 2001 and 2002. The resulting series of extraordinary portraits shows, in astounding detail and clarity, the fascinating physical similarity of identical twins. Just as engaging are the subtle differences between each pair, confirming each twin’s individuality. Mark later interviewed many of her subjects over the phone. Amid a range of anecdotes and confessed frustrations, the intense bond shared between these special siblings is further illuminated in their personal statements. See these fascinating portraits on view now at The San Diego Museum of Art.
