Ghosts & Gravestones Frightseeing Tour

Aug 28, 2023 - ongoing

Dying to take a ride on the dark side? Join us for a spirited & entertaining tour built on stories of history, mystery and legends of San Diego’s past! Travel back in time with us and learn about the spirits of notorious wild characters like gunslingers, gamblers, and ladies of the night who lived and died in San Diego. You’ll start the tour with a ride in our special all-black “doom buggies”, spirited away to Pioneer Park in Mission Hills where things are not always what they seem. The tour continues to El Campo Cemetery in Old Town, one of the oldest burial grounds in San Diego, where you’ll be chilled to the bone with tales from beyond the grave.

Centennial Salute

Mar 29, 2024

On Friday, March 29, we will “turn back the clock” and honor two important roles Balboa Theatre has played in the last 100 years: a silent movie theatre, and a wartime home for sailors. A screening of the silent film “The Flying Fleet” will be the highlight of an evening celebrating San Diego’s military service members. “The Flying Fleet” marks the first major Hollywood production to film at Naval Air Station North Island, and features an appearance by the USS Langley, the United States’ first aircraft carrier! Theatre organist Ken Double will accompany the 1929 film on our vintage Robert Morton theatre pipe organ, using its various “voices” to enhance the action-packed film.

Wine Lecture: Save the Last Bullet

Jun 20, 2024

Join the Coronado Historical Association for our final Wine & Lecture this Spring, Save the Last Bullet. Heidi Langbein-Allen’s father, Willi Langbein, was thirteen when the Nazis took him away from his parents under the pretense of protecting him. The real reason was to mold him into cannon-fodder for use against the Russian army. Willi was sent to the Eastern Front at age fourteen in the last days of the war to stave off the advance of the Russians. Neither he nor his classmates We expected to return alive from the final battles of the Third Reich.

Having survived the war against all odds, Willi returned home to find everything he knew destroyed. Numb and confused, he was mandated to serve one year of forced farm labor, putting his life on hold.
