Open Cockpit Days at the Flying Leatherneck Museum

Experience a pilot's perspective!

Come sit in a cockpit and experience Marine aviation from a pilot's perspective at the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum! Cockpits of some of the aircraft on display will be open and pilots will be available to answer questions every other weekend during the summer. 2019 Open Cockpit Days are May 25-26; June 8-9, 22-23; July 6-7, 20-21; Aug 3-4, 17-18, 31; & Sept 1.

See 31 historical aircraft up close at this indoor/outdoor attraction as well as hundreds of artifacts from the earliest days of aviation to present day. Kids and adults can strap into an ejection seat, try on a helmet and complete an "I Spy" activity.

The Museum is open Tuesdays-Sundays from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm (except federal holidays). Check the website for more information at flyingleathernecks.org.  858-693-1723. Admission and Parking are Free.

The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is aboard Marine Corps Air Station-Miramar. The sentry-free museum entrance is on Miramar Rd., 3.9 miles east of I-805 and 1.3 miles west of I-15. (Look for the Marine Corps and American flags at the entrance.)

In the early 1900s, San Diego was a growing and thriving city, but with no rail transportation eastward. Spearheaded by John D. Spreckels—with his persistence and money—a railroad was constructed that engineers warned would be impossible to build. Starting in San Diego and dipping into Mexico, the “Impossible Railroad” snaked through brutal mountain and rugged desert terrain to connect with the transcontinental Southern Pacific in El Centro. It took twelve challenging years to build, but the 1919 completion was widely celebrated.

On Thursday, November 28, gather in Le Fontainebleau Room to enjoy The Westgate’s Traditions of Thanksgiving Buffet. Seating is from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and the buffet is $99 per person; $40 for children ages 4-12; and complimentary for children under the age of 3. Tax and gratuity are additional.

For those seeking a more formal atmosphere, The Westgate Hotel will also offer a four-course prix fixe menu highlighting the time-honored classics of a Thanksgiving dinner in the grand Westgate Room. Seating is from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and the cost is $79 per person; $40 for children ages 4-12; and children under the age of 3 are complimentary. Tax and gratuity are additional. Daily Westgate Room menus will also be available.
