The News in San Diego and San Diego in the News

The exhibition features a variety of newspapers from the Museum's collection. The papers span from a facsimile of the first newspaper published in San Diego in 1851 to papers from the 1920s. The papers cover important events that happened in San Diego and events that impacted the world as they were reported in San Diego newspapers. From the sinking of the Titanic to a list of letters left in the post office in 1851, the newspaper collection gives a unique glimpse into the everyday workings of San Diego's past.

Infinity Cube

Apr 7 - ongoing

Birch Aquarium at Scripps is launching Infinity Cube, a new, immersive art installation that explores bioluminescence by combining glowing creatures with world-class science, high-tech projection and an original soundscape. Step into an 8-foot cube and become surrounded by video projections of single-celled marine organisms - called dinoflagellates - reacting to various stimulants such as the human heartbeat, music, water flow, and air pressure. Through activities and interpretation accompanying the installation, guests will have opportunities to learn more about the phenomenon of living light and how marine species use it for camouflage, protection and communication.

Summer of Innovation

Jun 3 - Aug 31, 2017

The Museum of Making Music's fully interactive exhibition will introduce you to innovative instruments on the market today, and will open your ears and eyes to the many - perhaps surprising - ways that music is currently being made. Groundbreaking products showcased in the exhibition include the ROLI Seaboard Rise MIDI Controller, ROLI Blocks, Aerodrums, Stylophones, Phonotonic, Ableton Push, ATV aFrame, and Jamstik+.

In addition to these products, local sound creator, Dr. Chris Warren, will install a few of his own inventions including a body Theremin and the EchoThief Impulse Response Library. The EchoThief includes detailed sonic snapshots of resonant spaces. So if you want to hear what your favorite instrument sounds like played in Carnegie Hall or in the Cathedral Room of Shasta Lake Caverns without leaving Carlsbad...you can!

Alonzo Horton Exhibit

Jun 15 - ongoing

2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the arrival that would change San Diego's history forever. On April 17, 1867 Alonzo Horton arrived on a ship from San Francisco and saw in the dusty fields the possibility of a great city along the bay. He soon purchased a large plot of land on which he would tirelessly build New Town San Diego, now downtown San Diego, for the next 42 years. His influence is still seen in much of our beloved city and his name adorns many of our buildings and landmarks. The exhibit "Alonzo Horton: The Sesquicentennial of the Founding of New Town San Diego" chronicles the life of San Diego's founding father Alonzo Horton and the early growth of New Town San Diego. On view are the Museum's collections of photos, maps, and ephemera related to Horton.
