Homage to the Horse and Other Steeds

Pulled from the Museum's permanent collection and private lenders, this original exhibition will highlight classic horse figures and accoutrement of Asia and Europe; clay and wood horses of India; and artifacts of U.S., Native American and Mexican horse culture. Trappings for bullocks from Afghanistan to Indonesia, and camel trappings from Asia and the Middle East will also be shown, including a group of Iranian saddlebags.

Autism Accessibility Mornings at the Fleet

The Fleet invites the Autism Spectrum Community to enjoy our museum through this special opportunity. Adults and families with children with autism can enjoy the Fleet's exhibit galleries in a quieter setting, an hour before regular open hours to the general public and with access to a special cool-off space. Visitors are welcome to stay and enjoy the museum all day. Admission includes a special IMAX film screening at 10 a.m. with the house lights on and a lower soundtrack volume. Regular admission rates apply.

The Fleet Science Center strives to be an inclusive place where people of all needs and abilities are welcome and accommodated with respect every day. We believe science is for everyone!

Annual Holiday Sale and Author Meet & Greet

The San Diego Archaeological Center announces our Annual Holiday Sale with Author Meet & Greet on Sunday, December 3, 2017, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The event will be held at the San Diego Archaeological Center located at 16666 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido, CA 92027.

The holiday season is finally here! Come by the Center to find unique items that are sure to impress and meet authors whose works include various aspects of San Diego County history. The authors will be available for questions and to sign copies of their books, including Vincent Rossi, Last Known Address; David Lewis, Valley of Dreams; and Don Liponi, La Rumorosa Rock Art Along the Border.

The Navajo Code Talkers

Growing up, young Navajo were told not to speak their language. But as young Marines during World War II, men like Samuel Tsosie Sr. found their words were their mightiest weapons.

The Marine Corps recruited Navajo to Camp Elliott (now part of MCAS-Miramar) to develop a code using the Navajo language for combat communications. Approximately 400 Navajo recruited by the Marines learned the code.  The Navajo were deployed to the Pacific to use their native language to change the course of critical battles including Iwo Jima.

The Navajo code is the only spoken military code that was never deciphered.  The code remained classified until 1968.

The Mike Tsosie Family has generously loaned for display Navajo Code Talker Samuel Tsosie Sr.’s artifacts from his time on the front lines in the Pacific during World War II.
