Learn from Keith Chan and Irene Gonzalez about the use of masks in Mesoamerica as a case study of cultural contact and change. They will discuss the archaeology masks as ritual and funerary items in societies such as Teotihuacan, as well as explore the community role of masks and mask makers in present day danzas. Keith and Irene will also describe their methodology and experiences in generating 3D models of a mask collection at San Diego State University and their progress in incorporating them in education.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego invites you to join us for Tall Ship adventure sailing! This is a four-hour adventure history sail aboard the schooner Californian.
The Californian is a replica of a gold rush era revenue cutter and the Official Tall Ship of the State of California.

Arrive early to take in your general admission visit to the entire fleet and exhibits, then set sail! 

Join the crew in sailing a traditionally rigged tall ship! Passengers will be invited to haul a line, man the helm and watch the crew as they scamper up and down the rigging to set and furl the sails. Listen as the Californian’s crew relates the history of sailing and exploration in San Diego, tales of whaling and sea otter trade, local sea battles, the art of ship’s gunnery, life at sea and more.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is thrilled to announce the return of its beloved Star of India Family Overnight Experience — an unforgettable opportunity to stay aboard the iconic 1863 bark Star of India and step back in time.

Time: 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 a.m. the following morning. Includes dinner and breakfast. Held dockside at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Space is limited – advance registration required.

Families sign on as “crew” and take part in an immersive living history adventure led by our costumed, in-character instructors. This special overnight program is usually reserved for student field trips — but this summer, it’s open to families looking for a one-of-a-kind experience. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Activities include: Raising sails, moving cargo, learning sailor skills, and more!
