The Gala at MCASD

Chaired by Board Member Chris Birchby and Adrienne Birchby, this year’s theme is Currents. Contemporary art is a transformative force moving us to think and feel things in new ways, much as ocean currents direct the flow of water from one place to another.

Join us for an exhilarating evening overlooking the shimmering waves in La Jolla as we celebrate contemporary art, artists, and their impact on our community -- the current that runs through us all.

Guests will begin their night with cocktails and fine hors d'oeuvres, leading into a seaside dinner curated by Chef Tim Kolanko of Urban Kitchen Group. The night will come alive with an electrifying performance by singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter, complemented by vibrant live entertainment and dancing.

Play Day: Sprouting Sculptures

Oct 13, 2024

Join us on Free Second Sunday for our free family series, Play Day!

Inspired by the piece Medicine Woman (1993) by Beverly Buchanan, on display in MCASD’s new exhibition For Dear Life: Art, Medicine, and Disability, we will make sculptures using recycled materials, popsicle sticks, clay, and seeds that will blossom into plants.

Art Activity: Create your own sprouting sculpture and learn about the cycles of life.

Schedule:

At 11AM, explore works from MCASD's new exhibition For Dear Life: Art, Medicine, and Disability through a kid friendly tour.
At 12:30PM, listen to stories, songs, and rhymes in Storytime with Librarian on the Go, Ms. Katia Graham
From 11AM-2PM, enjoy music by a local DJ, a cozy book nook, sketching with water, and book recommendations from the Librarian on the Go.

A Space for All of Us

Jan 16, 2024 - ongoing

The Museum's sensory-friendly quiet hours are held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. This time is dedicated to creating a calmer, quieter museum experience. We remain open to the public during this time, and all are welcome to visit the Museum.

During this time, specific exhibit features in the main Museum building will be turned off to minimize audio and visual stimulation. Noise-blocking headphones are free for check-out at the main Admissions desk and the entrance to the Cannibals: Myth & Reality exhibition.

Exhibit features in the Cannibals: Myth & Reality exhibit will remain on, and all exhibits will be fully turned on at 11 a.m. Admission purchased during sensory-friendly quiet hours is the same as standard admission and applies to the entire day.
