The Rebel Lovers is the rockin' duo led by punk-rock accordionist Renée de la Prade with Ingo Brauning on drums. The duo—with Renee singing, stomping, and dancing as well as playing accordion—performs a mix of zydeco, blues, rock, soul for people of all ages.
Renée grew up playing guitar in Northern California, loving rock and punk music. She got her first taste of Irish traditional music, including the accordion, when she was 19. She immediately decided to learn the accordion, incorporating elements of punk and traditional folk music into a unique musical language. To make money while studying at Berklee College of Music, Renée practiced on the streets in hopes of earning some tips. The setting made immediate sense for her, and she has now racked up 17 years as a street performer. Renée also launched the Accordion Babes Pin-Up Calendar as a vehicle for celebrating some of the many talented women who play the accordion.
Funded in part by the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office.
This event is presented in conjunction with the Accordions: Expanding Voices in the USA special exhibition.
