Experimental Archaeology: Pottery

Sep 16 - Sep 23, 2017

In Part I of the two-part workshop, participants will learn how to construct a vessel by creating a semi-hemispherical base, coils, and using a paddle and anvil, and burnishing techniques to finish.

Part II of the workshop will consist of firing the created vessels in an open pit.  Participants will be able to keep their vessel, paddle, and anvil at the end of the workshop.

Musical Voice of the Theremin

Randy George is one of a small handful of musicians in the world today that can carry the title of Theremin virtuoso.

Joined by a variety of musicians, Randy will demonstrate the Theremin's musical range - from sounding like a human voice, a stringed instrument, a wind instrument and more. Difficult to master, this concert will be a rare opportunity to experience first hand the beauty of this innovative and pioneering instrument.

Randy has dedicated his life as a musician to mastering the Theremin. Randy holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas and is best known for his contributions to the escalating worldwide awareness of the Theremin online. His video creations featuring the Theremin in a variety of musical contexts have been seen by over 20 million people.

SEA Days: 100 Island Challenge

Discover Science, Exploration & Adventure. Coral reefs are often referred to as the "rainforests of the sea," and like rainforests they face many challenges. Researchers at Scripps Oceanography are studying 100 islands to track over time. Learn more about what it takes to study coral reef diversity without having to don a wetsuit! SEA Days is included with aquarium admission. Public Admission price is $18.50 for adults and $14 for children ages 3-17. For more information, visit aquarium.ucsd.edu. Proceeds support exhibits and educational programming at Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

American and European Folk Art

This exhibition is dedicated to nearly three centuries of American and European folk art from the Museum's collection, with many artworks on view for the very first time. Colorful quilts, whimsical whirligigs, baskets and decorative boxes will be showcased along with curious objects, such as a carnival knockdown figure, Victorian tenth-anniversary tin, and sailors' love tokens - all created by unknown makers. Figurative sculptural objects will also be on view, including works by Felipe Archuleta, Gerard Cambon and Beatrice Wood, in addition to baskets and ceramic vessels, a carved and painted wood barber pole and needlepoint samplers.
