Cailfornia's Northern Channel Islands

An Ecological & Human History

California’s Northern Channel Islands, sometimes called the American Galápagos, are often celebrated as a trip back in time where tourists can view glimpses of California prior to modern development. The islands are sometimes portrayed as frozen moments in history where ecosystems developed in virtual isolation for tens of thousands of years. For at least 13,000 years, however, the Chumash and their ancestors occupied the islands, leaving behind one of the longest and best preserved archaeological records in the Americas.

Lecture: A Field Guide to Pseudoscience

May 16, 2024

Is there archaeological evidence that giant, human-like creatures once walked the Earth? Did the Lost Tribes of Israel visit New Mexico, etching the Ten Commandments into a boulder? Did Native Americans encounter visitors from other planets, painting images of space-suited aliens on canyon walls in Utah? Have archaeologists discovered the far western outpost of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, not in Egypt but in California?

This Zoom lecture with Dr. Ken Feder will reveal the truth underlying these and many other ancient mysteries. Spoiler alert: The answer to each of them is a resolute “no!” Nevertheless, the stories behind these and other wild claims about the ancient past are fascinating and occasionally a little hilarious. As a bonus, we will tell you how you can personally visit these places and see them for yourselves.

OkCello

Jun 21, 2024

Okorie Johnson is an American cellist-songwriter who performs under the moniker OkCello. His artistry integrates cello performance, live-sound-looping, improvisation, and storytelling - all culminating in original compositions that collide classical with jazz, EDM, reggae, and funk.

OkCello is inspired by the exploration of African Diasporic melodies and narratives and their intersection with people’s perceptions and assumptions about the classical and European nature of the cello.  As well, his work with improvisation attempts to embody the phenomenon of wordless prayer.

Over his career, Okorie has had the opportunity to perform and/or record with India.Arie, De La Soul, and Big Boi of OutKast, amongst many others.
