Lunch and Learn: Rediscovering the Lost Nathan Harrison Shotgun

Dr. Mallios and Jamie Bastide will discuss the recent rediscovery of Harrison’s lost shotgun and place this extraordinary find in the context of self-armament, masculinity, and identity in late 19th-century San Diego County. Drawing on recent insights from the Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project, a 20-year endeavor that has uncovered nearly 60,000 artifacts and revealed numerous new insights into this legendary local pioneer, they will also detail how the weapon was relocated and its significance for the region.

The History Center has hosted the exhibition Nathan Harrison: Born Enslaved, Died a San Diego Legend since spring 2021. As we enter the final stretch of what has been a fascinating look at both the the story of this famed Palomar Mountain homesteader Nathan Harrison, and the process of discovery, we are proud to host one final program featuring Prof. Mallios, as well as archaeology grad student Jamie Bastide.
About the the Presenters
Seth Mallios is Professor of Anthropology, University History Curator, and Director of the South Coastal Information Center at San Diego State University. He received his BA from the University of California, Berkeley, and his PhD from the University of Virginia. An archaeologist, anthropologist, and historian, Dr. Mallios engages in scientific and humanistic community-based research that offers insights into past and present issues of identity, memory, and myth making. Before moving to San Diego, he served as Site Supervisor at the 1607 James Fort archaeological site in Jamestown, Virginia. Professor Mallios currently directs multiple field projects in Southern California (including The Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project, The Whaley House Historical Archaeology Project, and The San Diego County Gravestone Project); has published 13 books and dozens of articles; has garnered over $2 million in more than 100 external grants, contracts, and awards; and has curated many public anthropological, archaeological, and historical exhibits.
Jamie Bastide is a graduate student in the master’s program in the Anthropology Department at San Diego State; she works as a graduate assistant in Collections Management, University History Curator assistant as well as crew chief, site supervisor, and lab supervisor for the Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project and assistant guest curator for the Nathan Harrison Exhibit at the San Diego History Center. She has received her BA in Anthropology and Geological Studies from San Diego State University. Her primary research focuses on using historical documents and archaeological assemblages to explore gendered social norms during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
