Once a year the US Navy makes a special exception for a thousand runners, walkers and bikers to enjoy an unspoiled and protected 5-mile stretch of beach starting at the Silver Strand State Beach and ending at Coronado’s North Beach.
The annual Low Ride and Stride event, put on by Coronado Rotary, is a completely unique, family-oriented experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the country. The race has grown dramatically since it began over 20 years ago and offers an incredibly one of a kind experience for the ardent athlete and excitement for the children and participants who are out for the view, the sand and a beach that has been voted in the top 10 worldwide many times.
Participants include runners, walkers and bike riders of all ages and styles. The low tide allows participants to follow the beach line from start to finish. This beautiful stretch of sand is hard packed enough to support road bikes and wide enough for joggers, cruisers and kids bikes to travel at their own pace.
The race itself is one of the Coronado Rotary Club’s biggest fundraisers. With a majority of the proceeds going to help support local combat wounded veterans. With hundreds of thousands of dollars being donated over the years, the event has become an important piece in supporting the local Military Community. In recognition of the efforts, the Low Tide Ride & Stride has received both the San Diego Military Advisory Council’s Achievement Award and the Armed Services YMCA Admiral St George Award.
