When autumn arrives and the summer crowds diminish, visitors to San Diego can relish in the region's sunny mild weather and enjoy a number of fun-filled fall activities to enhance their vacation getaway. During San Diego's shoulder season, visitors can find a variety of annual festivals and fairs, haunting Halloween celebrations and diverse cultural entertainment.

FAIRS, FESTIVALS AND PARADES

• The 13th annual Gaslamp Quarter Fall Back Festival brings alive the history and culture of downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter. Held on Island Avenue between Fourth and Fifth streets, the event occurs from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Nov. 3 and features food, live music, historic activities like butter churning and gold panning, spaghetti and pie eating contests, children's arts and crafts and more.

FOODIES FESTS

• The Spirits of Mexico Festival occurs Sept. 17-22 in Old Town San Diego and features tasting events for agave-based and other spirits like tequila, sotol, mescal and wine produced in Mexico. Guests learn about the history and culture of each spirit, current trends and appropriate tasting techniques through daily seminars. The festival also features the Tequila Trail during 6-9 p.m. on Sept. 19, when guests can sample traditional Mexican dishes from Old Town's many restaurants along with tasting selections of tequila, mescal, bacanora and beer. As part of the celebration, the Studio Gallery and other art studios in Old Town are also displaying “The Art of Tequila” during 1-6 p.m. on Sept. 19-21.
• San Diego's culinary community joins forces during Sept. 15-20 for San Diego Restaurant Week. Approximately 180 of the region's top restaurants offer prix-fixe, three-course dinner menus at just $20, $30 or $40 per person and lunch menus at $10, $15 or $20 per person. Visitors can sample the signature cuisine and sophisticated style that makes San Diego's dining scene one of the region's top attractions.
• The 19th Annual San Diego Festival of Beer goes on tap Sept. 20 in downtown San Diego. Sixty local and regional brewers will be in attendance, providing samples and tastings of their signature and award-winning beers. The event will also feature live music, vendors, food booths and more.
• On Oct. 6, the Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla hosts the 11th Annual Celebrate the Craft culinary showcase. Renowned chefs, vintners and farmers from across California gather for gourmet cooking demonstrations which highlight an enthusiasm for natural ingredients and innovative cooking and winemaking.
• During Nov. 2-10, hundreds of beer-centric events will take place during San Diego Beer Week, a countywide festival that highlights San Diego's award-winning craft beer, breweries and pubs; event dates, times and locations vary throughout the week.
• The 10th Annual San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival, the region's largest wine and culinary event, takes place Nov. 20-24 on the Embarcadero Marina Park North, located next to Seaport Village, and other venues throughout downtown San Diego. The festival features gourmet food, celebrity chefs, wine tastings, cooking demonstrations and more.

ART & SOL

• On Sept. 7, the San Diego Botanic Gardens in Encinitas hosts an evening of flowers, food, wine and fine art during their 14th Annual Gala in the Garden: A Stroll Around the World. Guests can soak up beautiful floral designs as they stroll the lush gardens and enjoy live music.
• Southern California's largest free two-day musical festival, the 32nd Annual Adams Avenue Street Fair returns Sept. 28-29 to Normal Heights with four beer gardens, seven stages and more than 90 musical acts, performing rock, country, folk, TexMex and more. The event also features arts and crafts, carnival rides, food vendor booths and street performances.
• Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater and the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System present the 15th Annual Trolley Dances, Sept. 28-29 and Oct. 5-6. Guests riding the San Diego Trolley are treated to site-specific choreographed dance performances at unexpected locations along the trolley's Orange line starting at Grossmont Center in La Mesa. Dances take inspiration from the surroundings and energy at six trolley stops along the route.
• Fashion Week San Diego is a collaborative entertainment fashion event occurring Sept. 30 - Oct. 7 on Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego. The event includes runway shows, trunk shows, an Art & Beauty event and more to celebrate up-and-coming and emerging fashion designers.
• The San Diego International Film Festival returns Oct. 2-6 to downtown's Gaslamp Quarter and adds a new venue at ArcLight Cinemas in La Jolla. The festival offers a full slate of films showcasing the best in American and international full-length features, documentaries and shorts. Additional activities include Q&A sessions with the directors, workshops, panel discussions, guest appearances by film and video artists and more.
• On Oct. 5-6, the Old Town San Diego Art Festival features more than 40 contemporary artists, craftsman, fashion and home décor artisans, plus wine tastings, international food sampling and live music.
• Held along lower Girard Avenue in the village of La Jolla, the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival on Oct. 12-13 showcases over 150 juried fine artists. The fair also features a wine and beer garden, live entertainment, a gourmet marketplace and the Geppetto's/Witt Lincoln Family Art Center.
• During Nov. 7-15, the 14th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival presents films, videos and workshops that celebrate the work of Asian artists from around the world. Screenings are held at the UltraStar Mission Valley Cinema in Hazard Center and showcase feature films, shorts and animation.
• Showcasing more than 25 bands from throughout the United States and Canada, the 34th Annual San Diego Jazz Festival presents nationally acclaimed musical performances to kick-off the holiday season. The event is held during Nov. 27 - Dec. 1 at the Town & Country Resort in Mission Valley.
• More than 60 galleries from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia showcase paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, videos and cutting-edge multimedia artworks during Art San Diego 2013. Held November 7-10 in Balboa Park, the contemporary art fair serves as a marketplace for the world's leading contemporary art galleries. This year's theme is Collide, which comments on different types of creative intersections and how they manifest in both visual and social settings.

CULTURAL EVENTS

• Visitors can become a part of history and celebrate the discovery of California during the 50th Annual Cabrillo Festival on Sept. 28-29. Guests enjoy cultural festivities, educational activities, music, food, dancing and a reenactment of the landing by explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on the shores of San Diego Bay in 1542.
• The 19th Annual Pacific Islander Festival on Sept. 21-22 is a free event that showcases the cultures and customs of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia with continuous entertainment throughout the weekend. Held at Mission Bay's Ski Beach, the event also features food, music and specialty crafts unique to each culture.
• Little Italy in downtown San Diego presents the 19th Annual Little Italy Festa on Oct. 13. A grand celebration of Italian culture, this traditional street festival offers music, fine foods, specialty crafts and Gesso Italiano, a classic Italian street chalk painting exhibition.
• Visitors can explore the Mexican traditions of the Day of the Dead on Nov. 1-2 in Old Town San Diego, when more than 25 museums, restaurants and shops participate in a community-wide celebration of Dia de los Muertos creating traditional Mexican altars and offerings to departed loved ones. A candlelight procession from the Whaley House to the El Campo Santo cemetery to make offerings to Old Town's earliest families at their gravesites tops off the unique cultural experience.

HALLOWEEN HAUNTS

• Halloween makes a splash at SeaWorld San Diego during its Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld celebration. This family friendly program features trick-or-treat stations for kids in costumes, a special Halloween-themed Clyde & Seamore's Spooky Adventure sea lion and otter show, Penelope's Pumpkinfish Patch, a variety of up-close animal encounters and photo opportunities at the Mermaid Grotto. The celebration takes place Saturdays and Sunday during Sept. 21-Oct. 27.
• LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad joins in the Halloween fun every Saturday and Sunday in October with its annual Brick-or-Treat celebration, featuring a one-of-a-kind, 4-ft. tall LEGO jack-o-lantern. Children ages 12 and under can participate in fun-filled costume contests and trick-or-treat with a souvenir goodie bag along the park's Brick-or-Treat Trail, featuring a kid-sized cul-de-sac of spooky LEGO homes with fun and creepy creatures.
• During Sept. 27 - Nov. 2, two screamin' good times await guests in San Diego. In downtown, the Gaslamp Quarter's popular The Haunted Hotel allows guests to venture through rooms and hallways inspired by haunts from Hollywood's favorite horror films. In Balboa Park, the Haunted Trail of Terror has guests running for their lives through an outdoor maze of walkways patrolled by creepy spooks and spirits.
• During Sept. 29 - Nov. 1, more thrills and chills await guests at the Del Mar Fairground's massive Scream Zone, with featured frights including a 3-D ghost maze, 25-room house of horror and haunted hayride.
• Night crawlers enjoy the annual Monster Bash in the Gaslamp Quarter occurring 6 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 26. This annual outdoor music festival takes over the streets of downtown's historic neighborhood with live musical performances on multiple stages, beer gardens and an extreme costume contest. This ticketed event is for guests ages 21 and older.
• Seaport Village's Halloween Bash by the Bay occurs from 1 - 5 p.m. on October 26. The event features trick or treating at more than 50 shops, photo opportunities with a living scarecrow, the Monster Mash Band and Thriller DJ and a costume contest.
• San Diego's uptown community of Hillcrest offers devilish delights during Nightmare on Normal Street, an annual Halloween street party and costume contest on Oct. 26 at the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Festivities include music, food, a beer garden and other ghoulish entertainment. This ticketed event is for guests ages 21 and older.

TALK TURKEY

• Hornblower Cruises & Events offers a Thanksgiving Day Buffet Cruise on Nov. 28 that is perfect for entertaining guests without all the hard work in the kitchen. The traditional Thanksgiving buffet is decorated in the holiday spirit and includes all the Thanksgiving favorites, including a glass of champagne upon boarding.

SPORTING GOOD TIMES

• During Sept. 13-16, the thrilling San Diego Bayfair features thunderboat racing, tunnel hulls, drag boats, hydroplanes, fireworks, a microbrew festival, action sports event and concerts, as well as specialty vendors and food, along and on the waters of Mission Bay.
• Starting in September, the National Football League's San Diego Chargers begin their 2013 season with home games at SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley. The first home game of the season pits the Chargers against the Houston Texans on Sept. 9.

MILITARY HERITAGE

• Held Sept. 13 - Oct. 6, Fleet Week San Diego is heralded as the largest military appreciation event in the nation and features a variety of events and activities throughout San Diego.
