Executive Chef Jonathan Bautista will take your tastebuds to a new realms at this fully-immersive, 1920’s Shanghai-inspired speakeasy in San Diego’s Convoy District.
When San Diegans are craving Korean hot pots, dim sum parlors, and instagrammable dessert spots, they head to Convoy District – the perfect place for exciting, authentic, and delicious Asian cuisine.
Among its many restaurants, you’ll discover Realm of the 52 Remedies, a hidden gem and secret Far East speakeasy inspired by a collection of ancient Chinese herbal recipes and San Diego’s creative culinary scene. Enchantingly mysterious, Realm is a one-of-a-kind cocktail and culinary experience. A gorgeously decorated 1920s-themed Shanghai parlor, it’s location is “hidden” inside the Common Theory Public House – known for its small plate dining menu and high-end beer selection.
Just past a white doorway, behind a hidden herbal apothecary, and through a tunnel that seemingly transports guests through time and space, there’s a place with bronze clouds carved into the ceiling, ornate lotus-shaped booths, and glowing jade-gold bar tops. Cocktails are mixed by head Cocktail Maestro Chris Lee and food is matched to each drink and nightly theme by Executive Chef Jonathan Bautista.
He calls his pairings “Omakase,” a Japanese word meaning “I’ll leave it up to you.” Where most chefs preparing Omakase might simply decide the menu items for the evening, Chef Jon takes special consideration to pair the customer’s individual preferences with the additional flavors found in the night’s cocktails.
But it’s no surprise that Chef Jon can handle himself around a good pairing. At Realm of the 52 Remedies he deftly balances Chinese, Korean, and Thai styles of cooking with San Diego flair. He brings in the best of all worlds to create something new and exciting in Convoy. “San Diego is very symbolic of my cooking,” says Chef Jon. By mixing ingredients and cultures together, San Diego resembles his culinary style, and, “You’re not going to get that experience anywhere else other than here.”
