Description

Shibori is a traditional Japanese craft with a history spanning over 400 years and more than 200 distinct techniques. Hiroyuki Murase, Creative Director of suzusan, will lead a special workshop to introduce the history, background, and techniques of this art.

In this four-hour workshop, participants will learn two different Shibori techniques and use silk scarves to create a unique, handmade piece. We warmly invite you to experience and explore the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship.

Hiroyuki Murase

Hiroyuki Murase was born and raised in Arimatsu, Japan, in the fifth generation of a family of Shibori artisans. Growing up, he wasn't particularly interested in Shibori craftsmanship. It was only after moving first to England and then to Germany in his early twenties that he discovered how special and unique his family trade was. His father, Hiroshi Murase, worked for companies like Issey Miyake at that time. When he accompanied his father to a fair in Europe, he witnessed the excitement of Western customers for something that was viewed as a traditional but rather ordinary craft in Japan back then.

After graduating in Integrated Visual Arts and Architecture at the Art Academy (Kunstakademie) in Düsseldorf, he soon took over the family business and launched suzusan. After initially producing shawls and accessories, he created his first ready-to-wear collection in 2015, followed by the first home & living collection in 2019.
