Traversing 50 miles, Historic Highway 94 is a two-lane country highway between the foothills of picturesque Rancho San Diego and the backcountry town of Boulevard in San Diego’s rural East County. Along the historic route, visitors can relive the region’s colorful past and enjoy many roadside attractions.
Stop at the Parker Truss-style Sweetwater River Bridge, the only one of its kind in San Diego County. Built in 1929 and now decommissioned, the bridge is included on the National Register of Historic Places.
View local wildlife in Jamul, home of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, the Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve and the Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area. Wildlife in the region ranges from coyotes and foxes to numerous bird species.
Savor a glass of local Sauvignon Blanc at Granite Hill Cellars in Jamul, featuring a relaxing outdoor picnic area under shady oaks. The many wineries along Highway 94 include Casi Cielo Farm and Winery in Jamul, Campo Creek Vineyards in Campo and Dulzura Vineyard and Winery on the pioneer-era Clark Ranch in Dulzura.
Turn off to Barrett Lake, known for its amazing freshwater bass fishing. Stop in at the nearby Barrett Junction Café and Mercantile, which has earned a reputation for its Friday night fish fry and eclectic décor since its opening in 1946.
Take a step back in time at the Potrero General Store in Potrero, dating back to the stagecoach era of the late-1800’s. Connected to the general store is Café 94, famous for its homestyle meals.
Relive local history at the two-story Gaskill Brothers' Stone Store Museum in Campo. The museum’s upper level is dedicated to nearby Camp Lockett, a historic military facility that was once home to the Buffalo Soldiers, the Black Cavalry of the U.S. Army formed in 1866.
Motor over to the Motor Transport Museum in Campo, home to more than 200 antique trucks and other motor transport vehicles. The museum is housed in the historic Campo Feldspar Mill, built in 1929 to mill feldspar mined in nearby Hauser Canyon.
